Chana Masala Savory Indian Chickpeas Recipe

Try this chana masala dish and don’t look back. Indian cuisine is not limited to curry sauces. This twist on Indian chickpea curry features a healthy blend of chickpeas, tomatoes, onions and spices. Both carnivores and vegetarians will enjoy this meal. My kids love it. If the kids are eating, skip the green chili. Serve with basmati or jasmine rice and enjoy. Namaste everyone!

Chana Masala is a popular and flavorful Indian dish made with chickpeas. Here’s a recipe to make it at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (15 oz each) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onion is soft and golden.
  2. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook for 1-2 minutes more, until fragrant.
  3. Add the cumin, coriander, turmeric, cayenne pepper, and paprika to the skillet, and stir to combine with the onion mixture.
  4. Add the diced tomatoes, water, and salt to the skillet, and stir to combine.
  5. Add the chickpeas to the skillet, and stir to combine with the sauce.
  6. Simmer the chickpeas in the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.
  7. Stir in the garam masala, and cook for 1-2 minutes more.
  8. Serve the chana masala hot, garnished with fresh cilantro.
