Difference between Arteries and Veins

Arteries and arteries are two different blood vessels, basically carrying blood throughout the body, but both veins are completely different from each other in how they work.

The main difference between veins and arteries is that veins carry oxygenated blood to all parts of the body, while veins carry oxygenated blood to the heart except pulmonary arteries and veins.

What is Arteries?

Arteries are arteries that carry blood away from the heart, where it branches into even smaller arteries. Finally, arterioles further branch into microvessels, where all nutrients, gases and other waste molecules are exchanged.

  • Arteries carry oxygenated blood removed from the heart except for the pulmonary artery.
  • These are deeply located in the body for the most part.
  • These are thick-walled.
  • These possess slender lumen.

What is Veins?

Veins are blood vessels throughout the body. These are sweaty, transparent structures that function by carrying deoxygenated blood from the tissues to the heart for reoxygenation. Compared to capillaries, arteries are thin-walled.

  • Veins carry deoxygenated blood toward the heart except for the respiratory organ veins.
  • These are superficial and deep in location.
  • These are thin walled.
  • Valves provide one way flow of blood/

Walls

Carry blood away from the heart to various parts of the body. Carry blood towards the heart from the various parts of the body.

Rate of pressure

High pressure, as the blood flows by the pumping pressure of the heart. Low pressure, as the blood flows by the capillary action of the veins.

Oxygen Level

Comparatively higher oxygen level. Comparatively low oxygen level.

The direction of Blood Flow

In the downward direction from the heart to the body tissues. In the upward direction from the body tissues to the heart.

Arteries are at a greater risk of certain diseases like angina pectoris, atherosclerosis, etc. Veins are less susceptible to diseases such as varicose veins.

Types of Arteries and Veins

 Arteries

There are three Different Types of Arteries:

  • Elastic Arteries: These are also known as conducting arteries, which have a thick central membrane that stretches with each heartbeat.
  • Muscular Vessels: These are medium-sized vessels that draw blood from elastic arteries.
  • Arteriosclerosis: These regulate blood flow in the arteries. These are part of the arteries that carry blood away from the heart.
Veins

The different types of veins:

  • Deep veins: These are located within muscle tissue.
  • Superficial veins: These are located near the surface of the skin.
  • Pulmonary arteries: These carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.
  • Systemic Arteries: These are located throughout the body and carry oxygenated blood to the heart for surgery.
