Difference Between Cyclic and Non-cyclic photophosphorylation

The photosynthesis process is completed in the following two steps – photoreaction and dark reaction. Photoreaction is a light-dependent reaction while dark reaction is a light-independent reaction.

Photophosphorylation is defined as the addition of a phosphate group during the photoreaction of photosynthesis in the presence of light. Here, phosphorylation occurs in the presence of light and is therefore called photophosphorylation.

Difference Between Cyclic and Non-cyclic photophosphorylation

Photophosphorylation is divided into two types, namely cyclic photophosphorylation and acyclic photophosphorylation.

What is Cyclic Photophosphorylation?

It is the synthesis of ATP coupled with the electron transport performed by PS-I alone. This reaction is not affected by inhibitors like CMU, DCMU or orthophenanthroline. This process is most often found in bacteria.

What is Non-Cyclic Photophosphorylation?

The system consists of two photo systems, PS-I and PS-II. This process also produces NADPH in addition to ATP. It facilitates the synthesis of organic molecules and long-term energy storage.
