Difference between Land Breeze and Sea Breeze

Definition: We all felt the wind around us. The wind is often referred to as a light or moderate wind. These winds are of two kinds. That is, the sea breeze and the land breeze.

These two winds are near large bodies of water. While the two are co-located, there are some differences. Before discussing the differences, it is important to understand what an ocean breeze and a land breeze are.

What is a Sea Breeze?

Before we learn the difference between land and sea breezes, let’s learn a little about what sea breezes are. The sea breeze blows during the day.

The sun warms the land and sea at this time. But the earth is warming faster, causing the air over land to warm faster than its counterpart over the ocean. This warm air expands upward, creating a low pressure system.

At the same time, the air over the ocean remains cooler because water can retain higher temperatures than land. That cold air is heavy and flows quickly to the low pressure region over land. This movement of cold air from the sea to the land during the day is known as the sea breeze.

What is a Land Breeze?

At night the land wind blows. The process described above is reversed when night falls. The ground heats up quickly but also cools down quickly.

Thus, the sea air remains warm long after sunset. This creates low pressure on the lake. The land air, being cold, blows quickly to replace the light breeze over the ocean.

Knowing the basics allows you to quickly tell the difference between onshore and offshore winds. Read on to help you with this difference.

Difference between Land Breeze and Sea Breeze

Land Breeze Sea Breeze
The land breeze is shallow. The sea breeze is deep.
Land breezes are normally experienced during winter and autumn. This is due to the cooler nights. Sea breezes normally occur during the spring and summer seasons. This is due to the consequential temperature differences between land and water.
Land breezes’ pace span from 5 to 8 knots. Sea breezes’ pace span from 10 to 20 knots.
The temperature might remain the same when the land breeze occurs. Sea breeze tends to decrease the air temperature.
Land breezes usually blow dry winds. Sea breeze contains more amount of moisture due to the particles absorbed from the water bodies.
