Dominican Style Oatmeal Recipe
After living in the Dominican Republic for years, I have come to appreciate their simple and delicious way of preparing oats. The texture is creamier and runnier and the taste is comforting in the morning.
Dominican style oatmeal is a popular breakfast dish in the Dominican Republic, made with oatmeal, milk, and various flavorings. Here’s a simple recipe to make Dominican style oatmeal:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2 cups of milk (whole or almond milk)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 tablespoons of sugar or sweetener of your choice
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup of sliced fruit (optional)
Instructions:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the oats, milk, cinnamon stick, sugar, and salt. Stir well to combine.
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let the oatmeal simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
- Remove the cinnamon stick and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Serve hot, topped with sliced fruit if desired.
Some variations of Dominican style oatmeal include adding raisins, nuts, or coconut flakes for extra texture and flavor. Enjoy!
