Dominican Style Oatmeal Recipe

After living in the Dominican Republic for years, I have come to appreciate their simple and delicious way of preparing oats. The texture is creamier and runnier and the taste is comforting in the morning.

Dominican Style Oatmeal

Dominican style oatmeal is a popular breakfast dish in the Dominican Republic, made with oatmeal, milk, and various flavorings. Here’s a simple recipe to make Dominican style oatmeal:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 cups of milk (whole or almond milk)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar or sweetener of your choice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of sliced fruit (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the oats, milk, cinnamon stick, sugar, and salt. Stir well to combine.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let the oatmeal simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  3. Remove the cinnamon stick and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Serve hot, topped with sliced fruit if desired.

Some variations of Dominican style oatmeal include adding raisins, nuts, or coconut flakes for extra texture and flavor. Enjoy!
