It is one of the fat-soluble vitamins in the human body. It is sometimes called the sunshine vitamin due to the body’s ability to manufacture it when exposed to the sun in all types of mammals.

Exposure to sunlight also plays an important role in providing the body with part of its need for vitamin D.

Vitamin D plays a major role in strengthening the immune system and protecting against some types of cancer. It helps the body absorb calcium, strengthens bones, and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Its deficiency causes osteoporosis and thinning of bones in adults, and rickets in children.

The Importance of Vitamin D for the Body

Preventing diabetes: Recent studies have proven the ability of vitamin D to prevent diabetes, and the accompanying eye and kidney problems and nerve damage, if the body gets its need of vitamin D.

Reducing cancer: A recent study has confirmed the ability of this vitamin to reduce the risk of some cancers, such as: breast cancer, colon cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer. High levels of vitamin D in the body inhibit the growth of cancer cells and prevent them from spreading from one organ to another.

Strengthening the heart: Vitamin D maintains the flexibility of blood vessels, and its deficiency exposes the body to high blood pressure and heart disease.

Strengthening bones: It helps absorb and store calcium, and regulate its levels in the blood.

Improving muscle functions: Vitamin D improves muscle functions, and its deficiency causes a decrease in physical fitness.

Eggs: Eggs are a rich source of vitamin D, especially the yolk. One egg provides approximately 10% of the body’s need for the vitamin. It is preferable to eat fresh eggs available on local farms.

Mushrooms: Mushrooms are an excellent source of vitamin D. The ability of mushrooms to absorb sunlight has been proven, and adding one cup of mushrooms to your diet gives the body what it needs in one day.

Fish and other seafood: Fish and other types of seafood, such as tuna, salmon, oysters, and shrimp, contain vitamin D, and are important sources of obtaining it.

Cheese: Cheese is considered one of the richest milk derivatives in vitamin D. It is also very important for bones, because it helps the body absorb calcium well.
