Differences between electron, proton, and neutron

Electrons, protons, and neutrons are particles that are part of atoms. They differ in their load. An electron is a negatively charged particle, a proton is a positively charged particle, and a neutron is a particle that is in the nucleus and has no charge. keep reading…

Electron

The electron is a subatomic particle that has a negative electric charge. Its components or its substructure are not known, so it is known as an elementary particle. According to string theory, the electron is formed by a substructure of strings. It has a mass less than that of the proton, about 1836 times.

The particle opposite the electron is the positron, an identical particle with a positive charge. When the two collide they are annihilated and produce gamma-ray photons. They participate in fundamental interactions such as gravity, electromagnetism, and the weak nuclear force.

Proton

The proton is a particle with a positive charge and a mass greater than that of the electron. It is stable with a minimum life limit of 1035 years. It was considered to be an elementary particle, but in the 70s it was discovered that it is a compound particle, it is formed by the stable union of 3 quarks. It is part of the nucleus of atoms together with the neutron and its number determines the chemical properties of the atom and the type of element.

Neutron

It is a subatomic particle without charge and that we can find in the nucleus of all atoms with the exception of protium. It is said to have no charge but is made up of three charged particles known as quarks. Its summed charges are equal to zero, it is formed by two quarks of type below and one of the types above. It is unstable with a half-life of 15 minutes, each free neutron decomposes into an antineutrino, a proton, and an electron. It has a mass greater than that of the proton. suggested video: electron, proton, and neutron

Differences between electron, proton, and neutron

  • An electron is an elementary particle with a negative electric charge. It orbits the nucleus of an atom.
  • A proton is a particle composed of three quarks and has a positive charge. It is found in the nucleus of an atom. It has a mass of 1838.4 times that of the electron.
  • A neutron is a neutrally charged particle made up of three quarks. It has a mass of 1.00137 times that of the proton.
