Differences between Longitude and Latitude

The Differences between Longitude and Latitude is given here. Longitude and latitude are two concepts related to cartography. Longitude expresses the angular distance between a point on the earth’s surface and the base meridian, measured along the parallel of that point. Latitude is the angular distance between a point on the planet and the equator.

Length

It is the angular distance between a point located on the earth’s surface and the meridian indicated as 0º (Today Greenwich) measured along the parallel in which said the point is located. This parallel is a circle whose center is the intersection of the earth’s axis with the plane of this parallel.

Formerly numerous were the base meridians such as the meridian of Alexandria, the meridian of Cádiz, the meridian of Salamanca, the meridian of Paris, and others.

It is measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds accompanied by the term “sexagesimal”

Latitude

It is the angular distance between the line of the equator and a certain point on Earth. It is measured along the meridian where such a point is located. Depending on the hemisphere in which the point is located, it can be north or south latitude.

It provides the location of a place in a north or south direction from the Equator and is expressed in angular measurements ranging from 0º of the Equator to 90ºN of the North Pole and 90ºS of the South Pole.

If we draw a line from any point to the Equator, the angle that this line form expresses the latitude of that point.

It is measured in sexagesimal degrees between 0º and 90º.

Differences between Longitude and Latitude

  • Longitude is an angular measure measured from any point of the Earth in the parallel in which it is with respect to the meridian 0º.
  • Latitude is the measurement along the meridian where this point is to the Equator. It is measured in North or South latitude depending on the hemisphere from 0º to 90º.
