The pavement is the base of construction that acts as a support for people, furniture, and animals. Also known as pavement are roads made with asphalt.

For civil engineering, the pavement is the layer that is made up of various materials and that can be placed on the natural ground or already prepared and leveled in order to increase its resistance. This enables it to be prepared for the movement of people or vehicles.


It is a sticky, viscous, semi-solid material at room temperature and dark gray in color that is mixed with gravel or sand in order to act as pavement on roads and as a coating on walls and roofs.

Asphalt is a binder for building roads and highways. It is a material found in petroleum or large natural deposits and represents the heaviest fraction or part of unrefined petroleum. Natural deposits are formed in wells or lakes from oil residues. It is also known as bitumen.

When it reaches the boiling temperature of water it is pasty, so it can spread easily.

Asphalt is a bonding material that ensures cohesion with its aggregates and can resist the mechanical action caused by vehicles.

Natural asphalt has been used since ancient times and is mentioned in the Old Testament as caulking material for ships.
