Peanut butter

Peanut butter is a paste made with peanuts and additives to improve its flavor and texture. It is a very popular product in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the Netherlands. It is a versatile food that is included in sweet recipes. As it has little humidity, it does not require refrigeration.

The peanut plant is native to Central America and was consumed in ancient pre-Columbian civilizations.

In 1890, George A. Bayle Jr. commercialized pasta as a vegetarian and protein food supplement, by 1895, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg created a variety with his brother Will Keith Kellogg where steamed peanuts were used. The final product was created in Australia by Edward Halsey, at the Sanitarium Health Food Company on May 29, 1899, and marketed in June of the same year.

Types:

  • Crispy: The pasta is partially processed and has peanut chunks.
  • Creamy: All peanuts are processed.

Compound peanut butter can also be found, mixed with chocolate, fruit jelly, herbs, vanilla, and others.

Nutella

Nutella is a brand of sweetened chocolate and hazelnut spread that is made by the Italian company Ferrero. It was first introduced to the market in 1965.

A previous recipe contained 50% hazelnut and 50% chocolate. It was developed in Italy when taxes on cocoa prevented the manufacture of conventional chocolate. In 1946 Pietro Ferrero sold a 300 kg batch of “Pasta Gianduia” a solid block from the initial mix. Then in 1951, it began to sell a creamy version known as “Supercrema”. In 1963, Pietro’s son, Michele, renewed this mixture to market it in Europe and renamed it “Nutella”. The first jar left the factory in Alba on April 20, 1964.
