Causes

Pneumonia occurs when bacteria enter the lungs and cause an infection. Inflammation of the air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) is caused by the immune response to clear bacteria. This inflammation can eventually fill the air sacs with mucus fluid, causing symptoms of pneumonia.

Many types of infectious agents can cause pneumonia, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Your doctor will begin by taking your medical history. They may ask you about when your symptoms first appeared, and about your health in general.

Then they will do a physical exam. This may involve listening to your lungs with a listening device for any unusual sounds, such as crackles.
