Seaweed is a good source of antioxidants, vitamins , and minerals, in addition to being low in calories. Seaweed is one of the best natural sources of iodine, and the amount of iodine in it can vary depending on the type of seaweed and the region in which it is grown. There are three types of seaweed.

The following is detailed:

  • Kombu Kelp : This herb contains up to 2994 micrograms of iodine per gram, which is equivalent to approximately 2000% of the recommended daily amount of this mineral.
  • Wakame herb: (Wakame); The amount of iodine in it depends on where it is grown. For example, wakame grown in Asia contains higher amounts of iodine than wakame grown in Australia and New Zealand. One study found that the average amount of iodine in wakame seaweed from different parts of the world was 66 micrograms per gram. Or equivalent to 44% of the recommended daily amount.
  • Nori: It contains a lower percentage of iodine compared to other seaweeds, as one gram of it contains 16-43 micrograms of iodine, or the equivalent of 11-29% of the recommended daily amount of this mineral.


Dandelion is one of the beneficial herbs that has been widely used since ancient times, and is characterized by containing many nutrients important for health, such as sulfur and potassium , in addition to iodine.

It should be noted that people who suffer from allergies to some plants should beware of using wild dandelion, and these plants include: chamomile, marigold, and ragweed.

Other Sources of Iodine

Seafood is one of the richest sources of iodine, and it is recommended to eat two or three meals of seafood weekly to obtain beneficial fish oils.

In addition, eating fish twice a week will provide a sufficient amount of iodine for the body. Dairy products and eggs are also considered food sources of iodine.

In some cases, nutritional supplements may be necessary if a person cannot obtain a sufficient amount of iodine through food. It should be noted that a multivitamin tablet provides 100-150 micrograms of iodine.
