The basic difference between wire and cable is that A wire is known as a conductor covered with an insulating or protective material, while a wire is a thin wire that is obtained by stretching different ductile metals.


It is a conductor, or set of conductors, covered with an insulating or protective material. Also known as cables are light transmitters (fiber optic cable) or mechanical reinforcements (mechanical cable) designed for the transmission of loads and movement.

The cables used to conduct electricity are made of copper (it is a material with high conductivity) or aluminum because despite having less conductivity, it is lighter and cheaper than copper.

Generally, the cables have an insulation of between 500 µm up to 5 cm thick, it can be made of plastic or steel depending on the use to which it will be subjected.


It is all that thin thread that is obtained by stretching ductile metals such as copper, iron, silver, brass, aluminum, among others.

Wire has been used for many centuries. The oldest manufacturing process beat metal sheets until they were given the required thickness, and then cut them into narrow strips that were rounded by subjecting them to hammer blows.

Another procedure to obtain wire was that of the row, a metal plate with holes of different diameters. The metal to be converted into wire was shaped into a bar, it was thinned and one of its ends was sharpened, in order to pass said bar through the different holes, from largest to smallest, until obtaining a wire from the desired thickness.

There are different types of wires and each one has specific functions. For example, copper wires are used to make electrical cables and steel cables are used in industry and construction.

Differences between cable and wire
