Difference between Hypothesis and Prediction with examples

The hypothesis is a person’s conjecture that can be scientifically proven. The prediction is speculation about something that may or may not happen, being its verification the result of chance.

Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a theory made by a person in the framework of some phenomenon or event that is under study and that can be verified through a scientific method. So a hypothesis is a statement with a high probability of occurring, produced by the collection of information that confirms it. To be considered a hypothesis, an idea must be able to be tested with certainty.

An example of a hypothesis is when a person proposes in a research work that there are plants that grow in the sun and others that grow in the shade; If when exposing a plant to the sun in the shade (as an experiment) it withers, in this case, your theory would be correct.

Prediction

The prediction is a subjective and unscientific allegation about the occurrence or course of a certain phenomenon. It is usually linked to pseudosciences such as astrology. The prediction is also used by sciences such as meteorology to deduce possible dates of events such as eclipses or tornadoes. An example of prediction is when they bet on how the score of a soccer game will look before the tournament starts, just because of the conviction or clairvoyance of a person.

Differences between Hypothesis and Prediction

  • The hypotheses are testable scientific statements.
  • Prediction is ideas that are subject to an uncertain future.
  • The hypothesis contains the degree of possibility or probability that a phenomenon will happen.
  • Prediction focuses on affirming the event without leaving any benefit to the doubt.
  • The hypothesis is the result of the cause-effect law.
  • Prediction is a thread of events that may or may not lead to the outcome of another.
